Watermelon (Pastèque) Seeds — Grelack

Distributed in Cameroon by: The Farmers House Ltd, Mile 3 Nkwen, Bamenda

What you get

  • Early, reliable harvest: Typically 70–90 days from sowing under warm conditions.

  • Market-preferred fruits: About 5–6 kg, nearly round/oval; light green rind with fine darker veining, red, crisp, sweet flesh that travels well.

  • Tough in the field: Commonly supplied as tolerant to Fusarium and anthracnose (still use rotation and hygiene).

Where it performs best

  • Full sun; well-drained sandy-loam with good organic matter. Avoid waterlogging.

Planting guide (field scale)

  • Seed rate: Plan ~350–500 g/ha depending on spacing and thinning.

  • Spacing: Aim for 1.5–2.0 m between rows × 0.5–1.0 m within the row (≈ 4,000–8,000 plants/ha). In practice, many local fields use 2 m × 1 m.

  • Sowing: Place 3–4 seeds per hole at 2–3 cm depth; thin to the strongest 1 plant after emergence.

  • Irrigation: Keep soil moisture steady from emergence through fruit set; reduce watering near full ripening to enhance sweetness. (Practice reflected in regional guides.)

  • Nutrition: Incorporate well-decomposed manure before planting; base-dress with a balanced NPK and top-dress lightly at early vining and at first fruit set (adjust to your soil test).

Crop care

  • Weeds: Weed early and regularly to prevent competition during vining.

  • Pests & diseases: Scout weekly for aphids and caterpillars; manage leaf diseases (anthracnose, downy/powdery mildews) with field hygiene, rotation, and label-compliant fungicides only if needed. (Kaolack-type lines are noted tolerant to Fusarium/anthracnose but still require IPM.)

Harvest & quality

  • Begin picking around 80–85 days when the tendril near the fruit stem dries and rind color dulls slightly; handle gently for transport.
